The Tukai desert near Huocheng in north-western Xinjiang is not a built circuit but a stage of the China Silk Road Rally - one of Asia's hardest off-road races, run for years as a state-recognised sporting event. The organisers describe the section like this: complex terrain, large elevation changes, soft sand and tight corners. In sand that combination is about as demanding as it gets. Soft sand wants speed and a light front end, tight corners want exactly the opposite - so you are constantly switching between driving and steering, and every misjudgement costs you the front wheel.
