Frozen Ocean Motocross

Frozen Ocean sits on Vanderstouw Road near Auburn at the northern edge of the Finger Lakes region and looks out over Skaneateles Lake. The operator dates the start to March 1987, when the Denman family turned their pasture fields into a track; it is now run by Ryan Walczak, who took it over from founder Bill Denman on his 80th birthday. The 66 acres hold the main motocross track, a dedicated 50cc track, a practice track, an off-road course for ATVs and side-by-sides, a clay oval for go-kart racing and mud bog pits. The directory MX Track Guide lists the main track at 1.2 miles on natural New York State loam, with rolling hills, tabletops and single, double and triple jumps, plus a concrete starting pad whose holeshot runs uphill. The infrastructure includes a pavilion, flush toilets, a concession stand and, since 2020, electric campsites with water hookups and a dump station. Tabletops, doubles and a triple mean a lot of jump faces per lap, and that is where it is decided whether the bike leaves the ground calmly: if the rear comes back too fast, it launches you forward off the face. Top of our cause list for that is rebound set too fast at the rear - slow it down before you take the jump sequences at race pace for the first time.
