Next to the Vestjysk Friluftscenter at the old airfield in Rom, Ringkoebingvej 125 near Lemvig, sits a track that is more a training school than a practice venue. It is carried by the motocross department of Lemvig Ungdomsgaard: around 30 active participants a season aged 9 to 25, boys and girls, with two fixed training evenings a week. The machines are provided ready to ride; participants pay for spares and fuel themselves and get them through the in-house cross workshop at a 20 percent discount. After every training evening the bikes are cleaned at the wash bay - that is not a suggestion, it is part of the programme. The surface is sand, and sand asks the same question here as everywhere: why is the rear rising instead of driving? The classic picture is a rear wheel that pogos and swims once it gets deep. Top of our cause list for that is a rear rebound set too fast - slow it down, fewer clicks out, and nothing builds up. For beginners, who make up most of the field here, that is exactly the difference between controlled and accidental riding.
