At East Fenton Farm near Drem, east of Edinburgh, MX Fenton sits on top of a hill - the views are wide and so is the exposure to wind. The layout mixes tabletops, corner jumps, whoops and small doubles with banked turns and technical sections. Riding is in half-hour sessions that alternate: youth from age 7 on 65s and 85s, adults from 15 on 125cc and above. Practice costs 25 pounds and requires a NORA 92 licence; a day licence is 5 pounds and the annual practice licence 20 pounds. Medical cover and food are on site, the venue can be hired privately and it hosts rounds of the Scottish championship. Half an hour is short. Go out with a plan - one section of the track per session - instead of riding every session as a small race. On hardpack the most common complaint is a front that feels vague and finds little grip. First on our list is front tyre pressure: too much air shrinks the contact patch - drop it and more rubber lies on the hard ground.
