The Niederbipp crosspiste is a child of motorway construction: in 1979 a handful of young riders laid out a practice facility in the Colas gravel pit, built from spoil left over from national road works. The result, at 2100 metres, is one of the longer practice circuits in Switzerland, with double jumps and - not a given on a practice track - a toilet. Riding runs Tuesday to Thursday from 17:00 to 20:00 and Saturday from 13:00 to 18:00, at 30 francs for the day. The evening windows are the catch: three hours, minus changing, fuelling and tyre pressures, realistically leaves two blocks on track. Arrive with the bike already set up and you will not lose the first half hour in the paddock - on a 2100-metre lap that is ten laps gone. On a circuit with doubles, the lip decides the evening. The classic problem there: the bike kicks instead of flying cleanly. Top of our cause list is rear rebound returning too fast - slow it down and the rear stays calm on the face.
