1700 metres long, between two and five metres wide, five tables, one double and eight single jumps plus four bermed corners: Moto-Cross-Club Dornbirn has had its own track at the foot of the Karren since 1973, and by Vorarlberg standards it is remarkably complete. The ground is sandy with a clay component and free of stones, and it is groomed regularly by tractor. One thing belongs before any trip, though. The club has around 140 members, 45 of them children, and the committee decides on new admissions each spring - applicants who are turned down go on the waiting list for the following year. Turning up spontaneously as an outsider will not work here. And a practical note from the track description: bring food and water, there are no shops within reach. With eight singles, a double and five tables in 1700 metres, the day is decided on the faces. The classic problem there: the bike kicks instead of leaving the lip cleanly. Top of our cause list is rear rebound - it returns too fast and launches the rear; slow it down, fewer clicks out.
