Track details
Dry loam is the ideal case: grippy, forms lines and forgives mistakes.
After rain loam turns heavy and sticky - knobs pack up and the bike feels noticeably heavier.
Kilcurry, a little north of Dundalk: here Dundalk and District Motocross Club runs a technical circuit on natural soil, shaped by tabletops, berms and whoops sections - and by jumps rated among the most spectacular in Ireland. A purpose-built platform gives spectators an almost unbroken view of the whole track, and there is plenty of parking. On practice dates sign-on opens at 09:30 and the first practice starts at 10:00. Whoops are the section where most riders lose their session - not because they are too slow, but because they stop driving halfway through. Decide before you enter whether you are driving through or rolling them, and stick to it. Changing your mind in the middle is the expensive part. The problem most likely to break your rhythm on a jump-heavy track: the bike bucks off the face. Top of our cause list is rear rebound set too fast - slow it and the rear stops launching off the lip.
