Your first trackday - what to set, what to leave alone

The three things that matter

  1. Tire pressure is the cheapest lap time. Road pressures are WRONG on track (too high - the tire overheats the surface instead of gripping). Track tires target a HOT pressure; cold-set 0.3-0.4 bar below it. Reference: slicks like Michelin Power Slick 2 run front 2.1 cold to 2.4 hot, rear 1.5 to 1.7 - note the rear runs LOWER than the front, opposite to road habits. With sport road tires stay closer to 2.3/2.1 cold. Re-check after the first session.
  2. Set sag once. Rider sag rear 30-35 mm street / 25-30 mm track, front 25-30% of travel. If preload is maxed and sag is still wrong, the spring does not match your weight - that is a parts decision, not a clicker one.
  3. Soften one click, ride, learn. The LAISA trackday rule is compression +1 front and rear vs baseline: comfort and a safety margin beat lap-time stiffness while you learn lines.

What NOT to touch on day one

Geometry (fork height, ride height), rebound extremes, steering damper to maximum, brand-new tires without scrubbing. One change at a time, same reference corner, notes after every session.

Warm-up reality

No warmers: first 2-3 laps are scrub-in laps - progressive lean, progressive brakes. Cold tarmac days: drop cold pressure ~0.1 bar so the tire flexes itself warm, and accept it will never feel like summer.
