Using tyre warmers: a practical how-to
This is the hands-on companion to the LAISA article "Track tyres: warmers, temperature and getting heat in" (slug track-tyre-warmers-and-temperature), which explains WHY the temperature window and the hot-pressure target matter. This guide covers HOW to actually use warmers - settings, timings, procedure and safety. For the pressure numbers themselves see tyre-pressure-by-condition. Setup output is always a starting point, never a safety guarantee; manufacturer and tyre-specific data always take priority.
Why warmers
Warmers are electric blankets that bring the whole tyre carcass - not just the tread surface - up to operating temperature and to hot running pressure BEFORE you leave the pits, so grip is there on lap one instead of after several warm-up laps (Chicken Hawk Racing FAQ; Bennetts BikeSocial). Two other benefits: they slow the heat-up so you do not "shock heat" the compound on track (which causes cold-tearing/graining on high-power or heavy bikes), and they cut heat cycles - keeping a tyre warm between sessions rather than letting it go cold-hot-cold repeatedly, which ages the rubber (Chicken Hawk Racing FAQ; LifeAtLean).
Temperature settings (front / rear)
There is no single golden number - always use the temperature your tyre dealer/maker specifies for that exact slick. As a validated guide
- Slick working range: Pirelli's Salvo Pennisi (Head of Motorcycle Testing) states the compound's "proper working range" is around 80-90 °C; race-tyre warmer temperatures overall vary roughly 60-90 °C (Bennetts BikeSocial, quoting Pirelli).
- Common single setting: basic warmers hold around 80 °C on a thermostat (Bennetts BikeSocial). Capit's standard element runs to about 80-85 °C (Capit User's Manual). Chicken Hawk cites 79 °C as the most common race setting, within a 63-85 °C band across compounds, and note some qualifying tyres want up to 99 °C (Chicken Hawk Racing FAQ).
- Standby / rain: for rain compounds or to just hold heat between sessions, Chicken Hawk uses a lower 55 °C standby setting; keeping tyres "warm" at about 52-57 °C between sessions is what saves heat cycles (Chicken Hawk Racing FAQ).
- Adjustable warmers let you dial the target; digital units typically span 40-120 °C (Bennetts BikeSocial), and Capit controllers have a set-point range up to 120 °C (Capit User's Manual). Front and rear are usually set to the same target unless the tyre maker says otherwise; single-zone warmers heat both to one setting, dual/multi-zone warmers can differ - follow the tyre spec.
Principle (no verified universal figure): the front and rear may not need identical temperatures for every tyre, and heat guns / pyrometers read the surface, so judge readiness by the wheel rim being warm, not just the tread (Bennetts BikeSocial). Confirm the exact per-tyre figure with your dealer.
How long to leave them on
- Full heat-soak: Pirelli's Salvo Pennisi recommends about 50 minutes for uniform heating; Bennetts gives 50-60 minutes as the practical figure (Bennetts BikeSocial). Chicken Hawk recommends 45 minutes for a complete heat-soak, starting with a gentle 7-8 minute initial ramp so the rubber cycles up slowly (Chicken Hawk Racing FAQ).
- Reaching temperature: a Capit Spina warmer reaches 80-85 °C in about 30 minutes at 15 °C ambient, rising to about 40 minutes if it is colder than 15 °C (Capit User's Manual). A Capit controller flags "Ready" only 10-15 minutes AFTER hitting the set temperature, i.e. once the whole tyre - not just the tread - is heated through (Capit User's Manual).
- Upper limit: do NOT pre-heat for more than 3 hours (Capit User's Manual). If there is a delay, drop to a standby setting rather than overcooking (Chicken Hawk Racing FAQ).
- Keep them on until just before you go out. Removing warmers 15-20 minutes early lets the tyre cool significantly - be geared up and ready so the tyre goes from warmer to sighting/out lap with minimal cooling (Bennetts BikeSocial).
Warmers and pressure - the key link
This is the point that ties warmers to the founder's hot-pressure rule (see tyre-pressure-by-condition and track-tyre-warmers-and-temperature). Race tyres specify a HOT running pressure, and pressure rises as the tyre heats - Pirelli's Salvo Pennisi puts the change at 0,3-0,4 bar depending on ambient temperature (Bennetts BikeSocial). Two consequences
- With warmers you set and check the pressure ON the warmer, at temperature, so the on-track pressure is your real target and is stable "before turn one" - it will not keep climbing out on track (Chicken Hawk Racing FAQ). Warmers give a CONSISTENT starting temperature and pressure every session, so grip stays consistent (Bennetts BikeSocial).
- Without warmers you must cold-set lower, because the pressure climbs from cold as the tyre heats and you want it to arrive at the same hot target - which is exactly the mechanism explained in the existing warmers-and-temperature article. Always check pressure hot, on the warmer, just before removal.
Practical use and safety
Procedure (Bennetts BikeSocial; Capit User's Manual)
- Bike on front and rear paddock stands on level, firm ground, near power (mains plug or generator); plan the cable run first.
- Clean the tyre of stones and debris before wrapping - stones can damage the heating elements, cause burn marks, and in extreme cases start a fire. Melted rubber is fine.
- Fit each warmer snug like a second skin, anchored on a spoke NEXT to the valve (not on the valve) so you can reach it to check pressure; keep drawstrings clear of chain and calipers.
- Only plug in once the warmer is correctly positioned and closed - Capit warns electricity runs the moment you plug in (Capit User's Manual). Note the time and the pressure.
- Set to the tyre's recommended temperature; check periodically that power has not tripped and the generator has not run dry.
- Check pressure HOT, then unplug BEFORE removing. Remove systematically (rear then front) and do not fluster.
Safety (Capit User's Manual; Bennetts BikeSocial)
- Never leave warmers unattended and never leave them plugged in when packing away - they can catch fire. Do not store them over fuel cans.
- Wear heat- and electrically-insulating gloves; do not handle a warmer with bare hands or work on a running/energised unit.
- Do not fit or remove warmers on a running motorcycle (the rear wheel can spin at tickover); be careful of hot discs after a session.
- If a cable or connection is damaged, unplug immediately and stop using it. Let warmers cool naturally, away from people; never force-cool with liquids.
- Warmers are for experienced use; the on/off switch is not a safety device.
When you do not need them (and their limits)
- Road riding: warmers are a track thing. Road/sport-touring tyres are designed to come up to temperature quickly across a wide range and generally do not need warmers; if pre-heating road tyres, keep the warmer LOW - around 50-60 °C per Bridgestone - do NOT bake road rubber to the 80 °C used for slicks (Bennetts BikeSocial, quoting Bridgestone).
- Treaded DOT / trackday tyres warm up faster than slicks and are more forgiving cold; some slicks (e.g. certain treaded "TD"-style trackday tyres) are designed to work without warmers - check the tyre (Bennetts BikeSocial; LifeAtLean).
- MX and enduro do not use warmers for grip - knobbly dirt tyres do not rely on a slick's temperature window. In cold climates some racers use warmers only to keep the rubber pliable for tyre changes/puncture repair, not for pre-heating (Bennetts BikeSocial via search; general practice) - treat that as a principle, not a numeric spec.
- Without warmers, you simply build heat on track: smooth, strong acceleration and braking while fairly upright flexes the carcass and generates heat; give it two to three progressive laps. Weaving does little at trackday lean angles and asks for grip before the tyre is ready (LifeAtLean). See the "Without warmers" section of
