Chain and sprockets: slack, care and when to replace
The final drive is cheap to maintain and expensive to neglect. A dry or misadjusted chain robs power, wears sprockets and can lock a wheel if it fails.
Slack
Set chain slack to the manufacturer figure, measured at the tightest point of the chain's rotation (rotate the wheel and find it) with the bike on its sidestand or per the manual. Too tight and the chain binds at full suspension compression, stressing the gearbox output shaft and countershaft bearing; too loose and it slaps, jumps and can derail. Re-check after the first ride on a new chain - they stretch as they bed in.
Cleaning and lubing
Clean with a dedicated chain cleaner and a soft brush, never a wire brush or harsh solvent that attacks the O/X-rings. Lube a warm chain after cleaning, on the inner run so centrifugal force carries it into the rollers, and let it tack off before riding so it does not fling. A well-kept O-ring chain lasts many times longer than a neglected one.
When to replace
Replace the chain and both sprockets together - a worn chain destroys new sprockets and vice versa. Signs: the chain lifts noticeably off the rear sprocket when pulled at the 3 o'clock position, hooked or shark-finned sprocket teeth, tight spots that change slack as the wheel turns, or stretch past the service limit.
Gearing note
Sprocket sizes also tune the bike: a larger rear or smaller front shortens gearing for acceleration and tight tracks; the reverse lengthens it for top speed. See the gearing guide for the trade-offs. Setup is a starting point, never a safety guarantee.
