Cockpit and controls ergonomics
Your contact points - handlebar, brake lever, clutch lever, footpegs - are where every input reaches the bike. Getting them set to your body is one of the cheapest ways to gain control and reduce arm-pump and fatigue. This guide is deliberately honest: where a real, sourced number or recommendation exists, it is cited; where it is genuinely rider preference, it is stated as a principle rather than dressed up as a spec.

1. Handlebar position and height
A handlebar bend is described by four numbers: width, height (rise), and sweep (pullback). Width is typically around 800 mm on most bars; rise is the vertical distance from the clamp to the bar ends, achieved by a steep bend near the clamps; sweep is how far the ends pull back toward the rider. More pullback makes the bike "feel like a beach cruiser." Bars of different rise/height have the same strength, so choosing a taller bar versus taller clamps is a matter of preference (source: Motocross Action Magazine, "Ten Things You Need To Know About Handlebars").
The neutral starting point most off-road guides describe is to rotate the bar so the rise runs roughly parallel to the fork angle, within a few degrees - this balances reach and bar height (source: The Lost Co., "Handlebar Position: Comfort or Performance"). From there
- Roll the bar forward for more reach and effective height (often preferred by taller riders).
- Roll it back to lower the bars and increase sweep (often preferred by shorter riders).
On most modern MX/enduro bikes the bar mounts offer four positions (two mount holes, each rotatable front/back) so you can move the whole cockpit forward or rearward. A key principle from tuners: get bar height from the bar mount, not by over-rotating the bar - rotating the bar too far to chase height also swings the levers out of position (source: PulpMX / Keefer Inc. Which of the four positions is "standard" varies by bike, so treat the middle/neutral mount as the baseline and move one step at a time.
Why it matters - weight bias and the attack position: bars set forward/up move weight rearward and open the cockpit; bars back/down bring weight forward. The target for standing riders is the attack position - knees bent, elbows up, back fairly straight - and the bar should be set so that in that position the wrists are neutral (a straight line through the forearm), not cocked up or down (sources: MXA "Speed Secrets: Body Position"; The Lost Co.). This is largely fit-dependent: there is no universal bar height number, so set it to your standing posture and test.

2. Lever angle and reach
Angle (rotation on the bar). The widely cited starting point is a downward angle of roughly 30-45 degrees to horizontal, chosen so the lever falls in line with the forearm and the wrist stays straight when you reach for it (sources: BestBeginnerMotorcycles forum summary of common practice; RevZilla "Free and easy adjustments to make your motorcycle fit you better"). The underlying rule from RevZilla is explicit: your forearm and wrist should form a straight line with fingers resting on the lever - a wrist cocked up or down risks long-term strain and reduces pulling power.
- Standing (MX/enduro): set the levers so the wrist is straight while standing in the attack position - many MX riders run levers relatively flat/downward for this reason (source: RevZilla; Vital MX cockpit discussions).
- Seated (road/track): set them so the line is natural in the seated riding position (source: RevZilla).
Reach / span (distance from grip). Reach is largely determined by hand and finger length, then personal preference. The practical target off-road: position the lever so your index finger's curve lands naturally on the blade, and use the reach adjuster (the small dial/screw near the master cylinder, often numbered 1-5) to bring the blade closer for shorter fingers (sources: Better Dirt Bike Riding, "Ultimate Brake and Clutch Lever Positioning Guide"; RevZilla).
Free play and one- vs two-finger. Leave a little free play so the lever isn't preloaded, and set the clutch reach so it fully disengages before the lever touches the grip - the aim is to actuate with one (or two) fingers while the other fingers keep holding the bar, which is what fights arm-pump (source: Better Dirt Bike Riding). Riders with larger hands commonly cover the brake and clutch with two fingers; the brake should be covered at all times on the road so you are always ready (source: RevZilla). One- vs two-finger is preference and hand size, not a rule.
Do not set them too low. A repeated, important warning: levers angled too far down become impossible to reach when you drop your weight low and back over bumps or obstacles (very common in enduro/technical riding). MX/supercross setups run levers down and close to the bar ends because they clutch less; technical enduro riders keep levers flatter and pushed in so they can still reach them while hanging off the back (source: Better Dirt Bike Riding). Match the angle to your discipline, and always sanity-check reach while standing.

3. Lever position on the bar (in/out and perch angle)
Beyond angle, two things matter
- In/out along the bar. Move the clutch lever inward until the blade just kisses the grip donut when pulled - this aligns your finger with the lever curve, maximises pull and keeps the pull light. Set outward and your fingers work harder or your hand drifts off the grip. Many riders run the front brake lever slightly further out than the clutch - that part is preference - but set both perches to the same height to square off the cockpit (source: Better Dirt Bike Riding).
- Perch angle. This is the same rotation described in section 2, but the point here is that the perch, not just the blade, defines where your finger lands.
Reach while standing (off-road principle). The single most important check off-road: after setting angle and in/out, stand on the pegs in the attack position and confirm you can reach and fully actuate both levers with one finger. If you can't reach them standing, they are set for a seated rider, not an off-road rider. Perch bolts are best left snug, not fully torqued, so a crash lets the lever rotate instead of snapping (source: Better Dirt Bike Riding).

4. Footpegs and body position
Footpegs are the primary connection between rider and bike, so their width, height and grip all change how the bike feels.
- Wide pegs. Most aftermarket pegs are about 57 mm wide, noticeably wider than many OEM pegs. A larger platform spreads impact load across more of the foot, is easier to find coming out of a turn, and gives a more positive interface with the bike (source: MXA, "Ten Things You Need To Know About Footpegs").
- Grip. Peg grip comes from the sharpness, number and shape of the teeth; sharpening the teeth is the easiest way to add grip (with the caveat that sharp teeth wear boot soles faster) (source: MXA footpegs).
- Height / lowering pegs and CoG. Lowering the footpegs gives the rider more bike to squeeze between the legs, lowers the center of gravity, and effectively raises the bars when standing - the trade-off is the pegs and seat contact things sooner. Some pro teams also move pegs rearward to redistribute rider weight (source: MXA footpegs). Whether lower pegs suit you depends on your height and riding - it is a compromise, not a free win.
Body position ties directly to the pegs. Standing "unlocks your body's natural suspension - your legs - and lowers the combined center of gravity of you and the bike," while you hold the attack position: knees bent, elbows up, back straight, gripping the tank with your knees (source: MXA "Speed Secrets: Body Position"). This is the standing-attack-position technique that the cockpit setup above is meant to support: bar height, lever angle and peg position are all set so that this posture is comfortable and every control is reachable. 5. Set it to your body first, then fine-tune
The governing principle across every source: set the controls to your body in a neutral position first, then fine-tune from there. A correctly set handlebar, grip and lever position "can help prevent arm-pump and fatigue in your forearms and upper body" and enforces a correct riding position (source: Better Dirt Bike Riding). RevZilla frames the same idea for the road: sit (or stand) in your normal riding position, rest your fingers on the levers, and adjust until the wrist is straight and the reach fits your hand - only then chase preference tweaks (source: RevZilla).
Practical order
- Handlebar - set rotation to neutral (rise ~parallel to forks), then mount position for reach/height in the attack position.
- Lever angle - straight-wrist line, roughly 30-45 deg down as a start.
- Lever reach and in/out - index finger on the curve, light pull, a little free play.
- Check standing - can you reach everything with one finger in the attack position?
- Footpegs - width/grip for feel; height only if your body proportions call for it.
- Ride, then adjust one thing at a time.
