Brakes: pads, lever feel and braking setup

Brakes are a setup item, not just a service item. Small changes in pads, lever position and fluid transform feel and control.

Pads and bedding-in

Pad compound sets bite and feel. Sintered pads give strong, consistent bite and work well hot and wet (track, hard riding); organic/ceramic pads are gentler and quieter for road. Whatever you fit, bed them in: a series of progressively harder stops from moderate speed to deposit an even transfer layer on the disc - skipping this causes a wooden lever and uneven bite.

Lever position and span

Set the lever span so your fingers reach it with a slight bend and pull to the bite point without trapping the other fingers. A lever set too far out forces you to stretch; too close and you run out of travel under hard braking. Match the rear pedal height so you can cover it without lifting your foot.

Fluid and feel

A soft, spongy lever is usually air or old fluid - bleed with fresh DOT4/5.1 until the lever is firm. Hard track use cooks fluid; flush it at least yearly. Steel-braided lines remove the squish of rubber lines and sharpen feel.

Setup serves technique

The best braking gain is technique: brake hard and early when upright, then trail off smoothly as you lean. Good pads and a firm lever make that progressive release possible. Setup is a starting point, never a safety guarantee.
