They call the Nowogard track Smoczak, and the nickname fits what the Polish directories describe: 1740 metres in the forest, high hills, natural sandy ground, with dune sections and muddy patches. It is run by the Cisy motor club; the venue is homologated for events up to Polish Championship level and is ridden for training almost daily. Riders and coaches rate it among the best circuits in the country, and the woodland gives shade on hot days - worth more on a sand track than it sounds. Hills plus sand is the combination that ruins most training days. Not because it is hard to ride, but because it asks relentlessly for fitness: every climb wants momentum the sand has already taken away. And that is exactly where the typical problem shows up: the rear spins and loses traction on the climb. Top of our cause list is too much pressure at the rear - drop it, entirely safe with a mousse, and you gain a noticeably bigger contact patch.
