Circuit Gilles Villeneuve lies on Ile Notre-Dame, a man-made island in the St. Lawrence River at Montreal. It was designed by architect Roger Peart and opened on 6 October 1978, then still called the Ile Notre-Dame Circuit. It was renamed in 1982 in honour of the Canadian Formula One driver Gilles Villeneuve after his fatal accident. The current Grand Prix layout measures 4.361 km, has 14 turns and carries FIA Grade 1. The venue has above all hosted the Canadian Grand Prix (1978 to 1986, 1988 to 2008, 2010 to 2019 and again from 2022), plus rounds of the Champ Car World Series, the NASCAR Nationwide Series, the World Sportscar Championship and motorcycle events. Between races the circuit is open to visitors for walking, running and biking. The paddock was demolished and replaced in the winter of 2018-19. The Formula One race lap record has stood since 2019 at 1:13.078, set by Valtteri Bottas in a Mercedes W10. The layout alternates between long fast sections and tight chicanes, and the barriers run close to the track - one of them carries the nickname Wall of Champions.
