Watkins Glen International

Watkins Glen International sits in the Finger Lakes region of New York State and has been owned by NASCAR since 2019; before that it belonged to the International Speedway Corporation and, from 1983, to Corning Enterprises. Racing started here in 1948 on public roads around the village of Watkins Glen, and the permanent circuit opened in 1956. Wikipedia lists the Grand Prix layout at 3.450 miles with eleven turns and the shorter NASCAR configuration at 2.450 miles with seven turns. The Boot, a section through wooded terrain that added four corners, was built in 1971; the Inner Loop chicane followed in 1992 as a safety measure. From 1961 to 1980 the circuit hosted the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. The surface is documented as asphalt with concrete sections. The circuit is defined by long, fast sweepers and clear changes in elevation - the venue itself describes it that way. You spend much of the lap at high speed, and there the bike rarely settles if the balance between front and rear is off. When it turns vague in fast sweepers, top of our cause list is ride-height and sag balance: get that wrong and the bike feels vague at speed, so set sag first before you touch compression or rebound.
