Track details
Dry clay rides almost like concrete: hard, polished, little mechanical grip.
Wet clay is extremely slippery and packs into the knobs - gentle throttle, clean lines.
Top Gun MX in Iron Station has been going since 1989, built by Al Lane, and the list of riders who grew up here reads well: Damon Bradshaw, Austin Stroupe, Jordon Smith. After the change of ownership the place belongs to Cooper Webb - two 250 West Coast supercross titles, three 450 supercross championships, one 250 outdoor crown. It is managed by Seth Rarick, who raced professionally from 2011 to 2015 and trained under Gareth Swanepoel and Aldon Baker. In practical terms: open practice Wednesday and Friday, 5pm to 9pm, weather permitting. You sign at the gate; under-18s need a parent or legal guardian present, and a guardian additionally needs a notarised authorisation. Spectators pay 10 dollars, children ten and under get in free. There is a free beginner and Stacyc track for the smallest riders, and track rental for groups: 750 dollars for eight hours or 375 for four, ten riders included, 30 dollars per extra rider. Group classes and private lessons on top. The ground is clay, shot through with hardpacked sections. For your riding that means: the front knifes into the rut and oversteers. Top of our cause list is a fork that is too soft - add compression so it stops folding away.
Track condition today
