Three big climbs and descents at a 60 per cent gradient along the hillside - that is the figure that separates the Circuit de la Vallerie at Husseau, on the D751 right by the Loire, from its neighbours. In the lower part of the track, directories add fourteen supercross-style jumps and tabletops of varying length; the ground is natural and alternates between soft and hard earth. The venue is run by the Amicale Motocycliste Montlouisienne, which has operated a children's riding school with qualified instructors since 1996. Riding is at weekends, with the last Sunday of the month reserved for the school; a full day costs 15 euros, a half day 10, and an FFM licence is required. On a 60 per cent gradient it is not power that decides the outcome but the gear you chose before the climb. Shift on the slope and you lose traction exactly where it costs most. The problem in the flat, off-camber corners: the front pushes and washes out. First on our cause list is a fork that is too firm and riding too high, getting no front bite - soften the compression a little.
