Two-stroke jetting basics: reading plugs, air and altitude
A carburetted two-stroke is jetted for air density, so the same bike needs different jetting as temperature and altitude change. Getting it close keeps power crisp and the engine safe.
The three circuits
- Pilot/idle jet controls roughly the first quarter throttle and starting/idle. Hanging idle or a lean off-idle bog points here.
- Needle (clip position and taper) controls the mid-range, quarter to three-quarter throttle - the most-used zone. Raising the clip leans, lowering enriches; move one clip at a time.
- Main jet controls full throttle, top end. Four-stroke-like sputtering ("blubber") at the top means a rich main; a flat, screaming-then-falling-off feel can be lean.
Reading it
A healthy plug runs a light tan/chocolate. White or grey is lean (danger - risk of seizure); black, sooty and wet is rich. Over-rich fouls plugs and feels flat; lean runs hot and can hole a piston, so err rich when unsure.
Air density rule
Cold, dense, sea-level air needs MORE fuel (richer jetting); hot, thin, high-altitude air needs LESS (leaner). A big temperature swing or a trip up a mountain can need a main-jet or clip change. Keep a jetting log per condition.
