Reading MX track conditions: ruts, sand, hardpack, mud
The fastest riders adapt to the surface. The same setup and lines do not work everywhere - read the track and adjust.
Hardpack / slick
Grip is scarce and the surface polishes. Run a harder/intermediate tyre, slightly higher pressure so the knobs do not fold, and soften compression a touch so the tyre tracks. Smooth inputs and momentum beat aggression; use any moisture or off-line dirt for grip.
Sand
Deep, energy-sapping, and the surface moves. Throttle is the suspension - stay on the gas, weight back, let the front float. Stiffen low-speed compression and rebound a little so the bike does not wallow, and consider a paddle/soft rear tyre. Sit further back and let the bike work.
Ruts
Commit and look through the rut to its exit; lean the bike, not your body, and keep steady throttle. A front that knifes wants a touch more compression or less protrusion. Pick the deepest, freshest rut for grip.
Mud / wet
Open mud tyre that clears, lower pressure within pinch limits, smoother throttle. Pick high lines and fresh dirt, and protect the radiators and air filter.
One adjustment at a time, ride the same section, note the result. Setup is a starting point, never a safety guarantee.
