New bike: the first setup checklist before you ride

A new or new-to-you bike is set for an average rider, not you. Ten minutes before the first ride makes it feel like yours and is the cheapest performance you will ever find.

1. Set sag for your weight

In full kit, set rider sag front and rear with preload. This is the single most important adjustment - everything else assumes correct sag. If you cannot reach the target within the preload range, the springs do not match your weight.

2. Tyre pressure

Set the correct cold pressure for your use - road, track or off-road differ a lot. Buy a gauge you trust and check cold, every time.

3. Controls to your hands

Adjust brake and clutch lever span and angle so your wrists are straight and you reach the bite point with a slight bend. Set the brake pedal and shifter height to your boots. Comfortable controls mean smoother inputs.

4. Write down the stock clickers

Before changing any damping, note the standard clicker/turn settings so you always have a baseline to return to. Then change one thing at a time.

5. First-ride checks

Re-check chain slack, tyre pressures and all fasteners after the first short ride - new bikes settle. Setup is a starting point, never a safety guarantee.
