Tain on the Easter Ross peninsula is regarded as Scotland's winter training address, and there is a reason: the main track at Balnagall Farm is sand-based, with tabletops and deep sandy berms, alongside an enduro course and a kids' track. There are pits and camping. The site is run by the Easter Ross Motorcycle Club, which regularly stages rounds of the Scottish Motocross Championship - the 2026 opener ran on 6 and 8 March in sunshine on deep powdery sand, and the track was described as immaculately prepped on both days. Tristan Purdon won Pro MX1, Charlie Heyman Pro MX2. Sand of this kind is above all a question of strength. If you come in winter, plan shorter blocks with real breaks rather than long sessions - a rider who starts sitting down is only drilling bad habits. The classic in deep sand: the rear pogos and swims instead of driving. Top of our cause list is shock rebound - for sand it is usually set too fast. A few clicks slower and the rear stops building itself up.
