Woodside Motocross (Elgin)

Grampian Motorcycle Club has been developing the ground at Woodside near Elgin since 1982. The result is a sand track on natural hills that winds through the trees and the Moray landscape - tabletops, whoops, step-ups and step-downs, plus plenty of technical turns. The circuit hosts rounds of the Scottish Motocross Championship, and spectators pay GBP 10 at the gate for a weekend wristband; camping is available at the venue. Sand plus natural hills is an honest but expensive combination. Uphill in sand forgives no gear-selection mistake, and downhill the braking zone gets longer than your head allows for. Ride the first laps deliberately one gear higher than feels right - in sand, revs are worth less than continuous drive. And the problem deep sand will almost certainly hand you: the rear pogos and swims. Top of our cause list is shock rebound set too fast for sand - fewer clicks out and the rear stops building itself up.
