School House MX sits on School House Farm near Consett in County Durham, right off the A68 and overlooking Derwent Reservoir. The gate opens at 08:00, riding runs until 18:00 in winter and 20:00 in summer; it is open most weekends plus Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and on most days during school holidays. Helmet and boots are compulsory - without them you do not get on the track at all. On site there is a large paddock, food, medical cover and toilets, plus training days led by pro riders and the option to hire the venue privately. The weather decides whether riding happens here, not the calendar - the operator announces at short notice whether they are open. So do not lock in your journey the evening before; do it in the morning. Loam with a lot of jumps brings one very specific kind of trouble: the front knifes into the rut and oversteers, precisely in the corner before the take-off. Top of our cause list is a fork that is too soft - it dives too deep and folds in the rut; a few more clicks of compression and the front stays up.
