Chemin des Marais in Arleux, between Douai and Cambrai: an artificial layout on earth and chalk with around 9600 square metres of riding area. Alongside the MX lap there is an SX section plus separate tracks for children and pit bikes - which makes it one of the few places in the area where a family can ride together on the same day. It is open Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, Sunday and public holiday mornings; the day rate is 5 euros and a UFOLEP licence is required. Chalk in the ground is the hint to take seriously: the surface turns slick when wet and dusty-hard when dry, and both happen faster than on pure loam. Ride the first laps with a margin before you take on the jump sequence. That is also where the most common problem sits: the bike kicks and bucks off the jump face instead of leaving cleanly. First item on our cause list is shock rebound - it returns too fast and launches the rear. Slow it down by a few clicks and check it again on the same face.
