In Lassen County, right on Highway 395 by the small town of Milford, lie around 271 acres at 4,100 to 4,600 feet. That makes Honey Lake one of California's highest motocross venues, and it is famous for one single feature: MX395, a climb with roughly 400 feet of vertical rise, counted among the longest uphills in motocross. The main course measures about 1.5 miles and runs through oak, pine and sagebrush; alongside it sit a novice, a mini and a 50cc track. The property was run by the Wosick family until 2013 and changed owners in September 2015. The altitude is not a detail. Above 4,000 feet the engine gives away noticeable power, and the long climb magnifies exactly that. Pick a gear lower than you would at sea level and keep the revs up rather than shifting on the hill. That brings out the problem climbs almost always produce: the rear spins up and loses traction. Top of our cause list is too much rear tyre pressure - drop it, entirely safe with a mousse, and the contact patch grows so the grip comes back.
