At La Tour-Blanche-Cercles in the Dordogne it is all about old machines: the local club Par Chemins runs the opening round of the French vintage enduro championship there, and on 19 April 280 riders lined up, ten of them women. The reporting is unusually honest on one point - most of them come out of a passion for the machinery rather than pure competitive spirit. That changes your preparation more than you would think. At a vintage event the limiting factor is rarely your riding, it is the spares and tools you brought. Set out to finish the day rather than to win it. The riding is on hard ground, and there the most common complaint is that the front feels vague and the grip is missing. Right at the top of our cause list is front tyre pressure - on hardpack it is usually too high; lower it, the contact patch grows and the front starts talking again.
