Big Air on Spring Drive in Newaygo is a family-run venue of about 50 acres, and it lives off a combination that rarely comes together cleanly: sandy soil, deep ruts and jumps that ask something technically without turning dangerous. Alongside it sits Little Air, a dedicated mini track for younger and less experienced riders. Practice runs Wednesdays from 14:00 - motorcycles only then - and Saturdays from 10:00, when quads are allowed as well. The rider fee is 30 dollars on the main track and 20 on the peewee track, plus 5 dollars for a day membership or 30 for the year. Racing happens one weekend a month from April to September, on Friday and Saturday nights. Restrooms with hot water, a power wash station and a concession stand are on site, and camping is available. Sandy ground with deep ruts rewards riders who commit early. Pick your rut on the brakes and stay in it rather than switching line halfway through - in sand every change of groove costs grip you needed on the exit. The problem most likely to find you here: the rear pogos and swims in the deep sand. First on our cause list is rebound that is too fast at the rear - fewer clicks out, and the back end stops working itself up.
