Virginia International Raceway

Virginia International Raceway lies on Pine Tree Road near Alton, Virginia, less than half a mile from the North Carolina border. The track opened on August 3, 1957, was closed from 1974 and went back into operation in March 2000. Wikipedia gives the Full Course as 3.270 mi (5.262 km) with 17 turns and 130 ft (40 m) of elevation change; alongside it run the Grand East Course at 4.200 mi (6.759 km) with 25 turns, the Grand West Course at 4.100 mi (6.598 km) with 28 turns, the North Course at 2.250 mi (3.621 km), the South Course at 1.650 mi (2.655 km) and the Patriot Course at 1.100 mi (1.770 km). On two wheels the AMA Superbike Championship ran here from 2001 to 2010 on the North Course, and MotoAmerica visits today; the operator lists the 2026 round for August 14 to 16. Accommodation is on site - the operator offers camping in three tiers, The Lodge, Pit Lane Suites and the Villas at South Bend. Our record lists asphalt with a fast and technical character, and the elevation change does the decisive work: crests and dips unload and load the suspension in the middle of quickly ridden sections rather than only in corners. That is exactly where a wrong chassis attitude shows up. Top of our cause list for weave and instability at high speed is a rear that sits too high, meaning a ride-height and sag balance that does not add up - set sag first.
