Track details
Dry sand gets deep and physical - the front wants to knife in; traction comes from throttle and the rear suspension.
Damp sand hooks up and gets faster - more grip, but heavier, blunt braking zones.
The Crow track is one of six venues run by the Southern Motocross Club (SMX), which lists it in its own venue directory at Gaddens Close Farm on Charles Lane, Crow Hill, near Ringwood; the others are Elvetham, Elvetham Forest, Pale Lane, Northchapel and Horsham. The club was approaching its fortieth year in 2022 and runs a broad class structure, from Main and Support through the ladies class to Pre-85, Pre-15 and Pre-25 plus youth groups. According to the booking page a session costs 41 pounds. Advance booking is explicitly not required - the club has gone back to signing on at the event for everything it runs. To ride you need a licence and have to register with Nora92; day membership is available. The only class with a minimum number of rounds is the ladies championship, where five rounds qualify you for the end-of-season trophies. The club pages say nothing about the ground; our record has it as sand with a tight, technical character and plenty of jumps. Sand drains your energy and lets the rear pack up over worn ruts as soon as it comes back too quickly. If your rear wheel starts pogoing and swimming in the deep stuff, top of our cause list is rebound that is too fast for sand - slow it down with fewer clicks so the rear stops building up.
