Track details
Dry loam is the ideal case: grippy, forms lines and forgives mistakes.
After rain loam turns heavy and sticky - knobs pack up and the bike feels noticeably heavier.
Rider Hill is the Vermont Motocross Association's track in Derby in north-eastern Vermont, at 475 Fontaine Street. Track directories put the course at over a mile long, at roughly 1,500 feet of elevation, sprawling across rolling farmland against the side of a hill; the surface is natural dirt and the layout holds singles, doubles, triples and table tops. There is no dedicated kids track. Annual membership costs 120 US dollars, practice 30 US dollars, event admission 10 US dollars for adults with under-fives free, and the gate at open practice 5 US dollars; cash, card and cheques are accepted. The place opens on select dates only, from 9 am to 4 pm. Nine VMA events are listed for the season through October 2026, mostly on Sundays. On site there is food, porta potties and free overnight parking, but no water hookups. Our record has this as loam with jumps and technical sections, and the hillside turns a lap into a sequence of climbs and descents rather than a flat loop. What matters more than any setting here is planning: the directories contradict each other on whether open practice runs at all, and the club only unlocks the gate on individual days, so ask them for the specific date before you travel.
