The Crossodromo Calvanella lies in the Liano hamlet a few kilometres outside Castel San Pietro Terme in the province of Bologna and is run by Moto Club Castel San Pietro. The Motocrossromagna portal describes a technical layout with steep gradients, used for training by riders of every level up to professionals. One thing to settle before you travel: access is only permitted with a valid FMI or UISP licence. Summer hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 14:30 to 19:00 and weekends and holidays from 11:00 to 19:00; in winter it is 13:30 to 17:00 and 11:00 to 17:00. Track status is checked through a recorded phone line, and exclusive bookings are possible. The mxcenter directory lists 1650 metres, hard ground, category 2, a minicross track, a bar, showers and 220-volt outlets, but no floodlighting. Steep climbs and descents on hard ground mean constant switching between braking, setting the bike and driving out - your body works harder than the engine, and after a few laps the forearms shut down. Top of our cause list for that is gripping the bars too hard: ride deliberately with loose arms from a centred attack position, light hands and plenty of weight through the pegs.
