Using the clutch in tight technical sections

In first- and second-gear rock, root and step sections it's the clutch - not the throttle - that keeps the bike alive. Ride the clutch in the friction zone to hold the revs just above stalling while the rear wheel crawls over obstacles, so a brief loss of drive doesn't kill the engine. Cover the clutch with one or two fingers, keep a small, constant slip, and meter your traction with short, feathered releases instead of stabbing the throttle. On a four-stroke a heavier flywheel makes this much easier; on a two-stroke a smoother (less aggressive) map or a flywheel weight reduces stalling. A good drill: ride the bike up a low kerb using only the clutch, throttle held steady. A calm, deliberate clutch hand beats a busy throttle hand every time.
