Wet-weather setup: track, motocross and supermoto
Wet riding is won with grip and smoothness, not stiffness. The same principles apply across disciplines, with a few discipline-specific tweaks.
Soften the damping
Open low-speed compression a few clicks front and rear so the tyre follows the surface and finds mechanical grip - a stiff bike skates over a wet surface. Slightly slow the rebound so the bike stays settled and predictable. The goal is a planted, communicative chassis you can trust.
Tyres and pressure
- Track: a dedicated wet/rain tyre keeps its tread open to evacuate water and runs roughly normal pressure - rain tyres do NOT run lower than slicks. A slick or road-legal track tyre caught in the rain needs only a small pressure drop to flex and warm, plus huge restraint.
- Motocross mud: a soft, open mud tyre that clears itself; drop pressure for traction within pinch-flat limits.
- Supermoto wet tarmac: a treaded road or rain tyre; drop pressure slightly for contact patch and warmth.
Ride smooth
Smaller inputs, earlier and gentler throttle, progressive braking, more lean on the bike than the body, and seek grippier lines - off the polished dry line on track, fresh dirt in MX. In the wet, restraint is the single biggest "setup" change.
Cold vs hot tarmac
Tarmac grip is about tyre temperature, and temperature comes from the tyre flexing under load. That flex is set largely by pressure, so the right pressure depends on how hot the track is.
- Cold tarmac: run slightly lower cold pressure so the tyre flexes more and builds heat into its working range - a cold, over-inflated tyre stays cold and greasy. Go a touch softer on damping too, so the chassis works the tyre for mechanical grip while it is still cold and the surface is low-grip.
- Hot tarmac: run a touch more cold pressure - the hotter track and air push tyre temperature up, and slightly more pressure limits how much the carcass flexes and overheats. With tyre warmers, set the same target pressure regardless of the weather (the warmer sets the temperature, not the ambient). If a tyre is genuinely running too hot you can drop the pressure a little - but carefully: lower pressure means more flex, which makes it run even hotter, so it can backfire. Watch tyre temperatures and wear, and adjust in small steps. As grip and load rise you can also firm compression slightly to stop the bike wallowing and to hold geometry under harder braking and cornering.
- Wet: soften damping both ends, drop pressure a little for a bigger contact patch - but not too low, because a wet tyre's tread must stay open enough to clear water and not squirm. Take a little preload / spring out for a bigger, more compliant contact patch and mechanical grip.
Warmers, a warm-up lap and checking hot pressures against the tyre maker's target are how you land in the window rather than guessing.
Setup helps but cannot create grip that is not there, and is never a safety guarantee.
