The steering damper: what it does, types, and how to adjust it

What it does
A steering damper (also called a steering stabilizer) is a hydraulic device that controls unwanted, rapid movement of the handlebars. It works like the damper in your fork or shock, but instead of absorbing bumps it resists sudden steering inputs. A piston moves through an oil-filled cylinder, and rapid handlebar movement is slowed as oil is forced through small passages or valves. Ohlins, Dam-Sport
The key point: it damps the ROTATIONAL VELOCITY of the steering. It does not lock, stiffen or restrict normal slow steering. As Ohlins puts it, a properly set damper adds controlled resistance "without affecting normal steering feel" - if everything is smooth and normal, the damper does effectively nothing; it acts only when a rapid oscillation starts. This lets the front wheel deflect over a bump, rock or root without transmitting a violent kick back to the bars. When a tank slapper begins, the damper provides immediate, progressively increasing resistance and dissipates the energy of the oscillation before it can amplify. Desmoheart, MotoSport
Types
- Rotary (vane) damper - a paddle/vane rotates in an oil chamber. Compact, common on off-road/dirt units. Ohlins, MSC Moto
- Linear / piston (cylindrical) damper - a piston slides in a cylinder; oil flows between chambers through damping valves. Piston-style units generally give more damping settings and a more progressive feel than rotary. Ohlins, 600RR forum
- Non-adjustable vs adjustable - adjustable units let you fine-tune the damping level for conditions via a knob or screw. Ohlins
- Electronic / semi-active (e.g. Ohlins Smart EC, factory systems) - damping varies automatically with speed and acceleration: less resistance at low speed for easy maneuvering, more at high speed for stability. Ohlins
Headshake causes - fix the cause first
Headshake (and, at the extreme, a tank slapper) is a rapid side-to-side oscillation of the front end, often triggered by acceleration over bumps, a wheelie or jump landing, or hitting an obstacle. Reported energy is high-frequency, roughly 8-10 cycles per second. Desmoheart
But a shake is usually a symptom of a real underlying fault. Common causes: worn steering-head bearings, worn or cupped front tyre (uneven contact-patch centreline), an unbalanced or misaligned wheel, fork/wheel/swingarm bearing play, and incorrect geometry. A damper is NOT a fix for worn head bearings, a cupped tyre or wrong geometry. Fitting a damper to hide the shake only masks the symptom - find and fix the cause first. Adjusting it - start low, add only enough
The trade-off is a principle, not a fixed number
- More damping means more stability and resistance to headshake, but a heavier, slower steering feel; too much can make the bike push wide and feel vague or unresponsive. Ohlins, YourMechanic
- Less damping means lighter, faster steering but more prone to shake. YourMechanic
Method: start low and add only enough damping to kill the shake. Change one thing at a time, in small steps, on a section you know well, so you feel the effect of each change - you will quickly find the setting that is "too much." Slavens Racing / Scotts set-up tips
Off-road units (e.g. Scotts) typically expose a low-speed knob (adjustable on the fly), a high-speed valve and a sweep valve. Manufacturer guidance: to feel the high-speed valve, turn the base valve off, then increase the high-speed valve about a quarter-turn at a time over a known trail. Riders often prefer more low-speed damping in loose sand or mud and less in tight, steering-heavy trees. The sweep range runs from about 34 degrees (off-road) to a full 90 degrees (on-road), with a common off-road recommendation near 44 degrees. Road/track differs from off-road: on tarmac the shake to control is high-speed instability on bumpy straights and corner exit, so speed-sensitive (electronic) damping shines; off-road the job is to filter deflection off rocks and roots and cut arm-pump, so on-the-fly low-speed adjustment matters more. By discipline
- Superbike / track - the classic use case. Damping is often speed-sensitive to keep the front stable at high speed over bumpy straights, under hard braking and on corner exit, without dulling low-speed turn-in. Ohlins
- Supermoto - benefits on fast, bumpy sections and on the transition into a dirt jump section; adjustability lets you trade stability against quick steering for tight kart-track corners.
- Enduro / rally / hard enduro - filters front-wheel deflection off rocks and roots so the wheel tracks better, reduces the "thrust-effect" of the bars being snatched from your hands, and measurably reduces arm-pump and fatigue on long, rough terrain. MotoSport, BikeRadar, MSC Moto
- Motocross - less common historically, avoided partly for added weight, though some fast tracks benefit and at least one OEM now fits stabilizers as stock. MotoSport, MXA
Care & checks (principle level)
- Bracket / mount integrity - the damper is only as good as its mount; the base/tower bracket and linkage must be solid and correctly fitted per the manufacturer's instructions. Scotts mounting guidelines (PDF)
- No binding through full lock-to-lock - the linkage must move freely across the whole steering range and not preload or bind at full lock; a binding or seized damper shows up as unnaturally stiff low-speed steering. YourMechanic
- Seal condition - check for oil weeping or leaks; a damper that has lost fluid gives loose, vague, inconsistent damping. YourMechanic, PartCatalog
