Mud is not one condition
The biggest mistake with mud is treating it as a single setting. Mud is context-dependent - it can be soft, sucking, slippery, sticky, rutty or hard-edged - and those call for opposite setups. Before you touch a clicker, decide which mud you are in.
The two poles
DEEP / sucking mud (behaves like sand). The ground is soft and pulls the bike down into its travel. You need SUPPORT: firmer compression to keep the bike up in the stroke, rebound the same or slightly slower, a touch more sag. Feel you want: the bike rides on top, the front does not dive, and the rear does not hang like an anchor coming out of corners.
SLIPPERY mud over a HARD base (roots, rocks, edges, ruts). There is a thin greasy layer over solid ground. This behaves like slippery hardpack: you want LESS firmness, FASTER rebound and more ground contact so the tyre does not pack down or deflect off the hard stuff underneath. Feel you want: the suspension reads the hard ground under the mud instead of hacking over it.
Most real mud sits somewhere between these two - read whether the base under the mud is soft or hard and lean the setup toward the matching pole.

Test and adjust
- Front dives / ploughs -> compression -1 to -2 (clicks in).
- Front stays low after bumps -> fork rebound faster (clicks out).
- Rear squats out of corners -> shock rebound faster, or shock LSC -1 (one click in, firmer).
- Rear spins -> shock LSC softer (clicks out).
- Rear kicks -> rebound slower (clicks in).
- Rear steps out sideways -> usually packing; rebound faster (clicks out).
Note: a clicker value is clicks OUT from fully closed. Firmer compression and slower rebound mean FEWER clicks out; softer and faster mean MORE clicks out. At the track riders count clicks IN to go firmer/slower. + means further open (less damping), - means turning in (more damping). Signs on mm and bar do NOT follow this rule.
The one-sentence rule: Deep mud needs support. Slippery mud needs contact. Packing needs faster rebound. Kicking needs slower rebound.
