Enduro on wet roots and rocks: contact over stiffness

Wet roots, greasy rock slabs and slimy off-camber are the most humbling surfaces in enduro - and the most common mistake is to go firmer to "control" the bike. That is backwards. On a slippery surface you do not need control of a big hit, you need the wheel to give and recover fast so the tyre stays in constant contact with the ground. A stiff bike deflects off every root and skates; a soft, active bike lets the tyre follow the surface and find the little bit of grip that is there.

The core idea: let the wheel breathe

Grip is only available while the tyre is touching the ground. Over wet roots and rocks the surface is a rapid series of small, hard, slippery edges. If the suspension is too firm the wheel gets deflected up and off each edge, loses contact, and the tyre skates before it comes back down. Soften so the wheel moves with the surface and the tyre stays planted.

Rear must drive, front must lead

The rear wheel has to drive, not hop: a firm, fast-packing rear breaks traction and hops sideways on wet roots exactly when you feed in throttle. Keep it soft and active so it squats and hooks up. The front has to lead, not deflect: a harsh front tucks or knifes off every wet root instead of tracking over it. A softer, faster front follows the line you point it at.

Tyre pressure: as low as you dare

Low pressure is the single biggest free grip gain off-road. With a mousse the pressure is effectively fixed (~0.8 bar equivalent, softening as the mousse ages) - a fresh soft mousse is worth its weight on wet rock. With a tube and rim lock you can drop toward the bottom of your safe range for a bigger, more compliant contact patch, accepting pinch-flat risk. Run the front slightly lower than the rear for bite and compliance.

Contrast: deep mud and steep climbs

Do not carry this "softest everything" setup into deep mud or long, loose climbs. There the rear needs to support the drive load, not sink: too soft a rear squats through its travel, the geometry goes lazy and the bike wheelies or bogs instead of finding forward drive. For deep mud and climbs, add a little rear low-speed compression back in (and consider a touch more sag support / preload) so the rear holds up under sustained throttle. Wet roots want give; mud and climbs want hold-up. Read the section and choose.

Change one thing at a time, ride the same wet section, and note what happened.
