Enduro suspension setup: cross-country vs hard enduro

Enduro covers two very different worlds and the bike wants different things in each. Cross-country (fast forest, grass-track, transfer stages) rewards a firmer, more controlled chassis close to a motocross setup. Hard enduro (rocks, roots, steps, slow technical) rewards a soft, supple, planted feel that finds traction at walking pace. Most trail riders live between the two and should set up toward the softer end, then add support only if the bike wallows.

1. Set sag first

Always set rider (race) sag before touching clickers. Enduro rider sag is typically 100-110 mm at the rear - more than a motocrosser, because the longer sag keeps the rear tyre pressing into the ground for traction. Check static sag too: if rider sag is correct but static sag is very small (under ~25 mm) or very large (over ~40 mm), the spring is wrong for your weight. That is a parts decision, not a clicker one.

2. Soften for grip, not just plushness

For hard enduro, open low-speed compression front and rear a few clicks so the suspension stays active over roots and rocks at low speed - the tyre can only grip what the suspension lets it touch. Keep enough high-speed compression to stop harsh bottoming on ledges and drops. Set rebound slightly open (faster) so the wheel returns and re-grips quickly in chop, but not so fast that the bike pogos over repeated hits. For cross-country, firm everything back up a few clicks for high-speed hold.

3. Tyre pressure and mousse

Low pressure is free traction off-road. With a mousse the pressure is effectively fixed (~0.8 bar equivalent, dropping as the mousse ages); with a tube and rim lock you can run roughly 0.5-0.8 bar but accept pinch-flat risk. Run the front a touch lower than the rear for compliance and bite.

4. Gearing and clutch for technical

A larger rear sprocket (or a smaller front) shortens the gearing for tight technical control and reduces stalling. Pair it with clutch-feathering technique and, on four-strokes, a flywheel weight for lugging traction at low rpm.

The workflow

Sag, then soften low-speed compression for the terrain, then set rebound for the chop, then drop tyre pressure - and only then chase the fine clicks. Change one thing at a time, ride the same section, and note the result. Setup is a starting point, never a substitute for technique or a safety guarantee.
