Chain and sprockets - the care and wear guide

Every number here traces to a named source; where no defensible number exists, it is stated as a principle - never a fabricated figure.
Slack - always bike-specific, manual first
There is no universal slack number. The correct figure lives in your owner's manual or on the swingarm decal and varies widely by model and suspension travel. Cited examples that show how far the values spread
- Road/sport bike: roughly 25-40 mm, sportbikes nearer 20-30 mm (EngineerFix; 24MX). A Triumph service manual quotes 13-32 mm (TriumphRat), a CFMOTO 450 MT about 20-30 mm at the lower run (TFX Suspension) - already no single number.
- Motocross: measured at a set point, not eyeballed. The 2025 KTM SX-F 250 manual quotes 58-61 mm, the 2024 65-70 mm - KTM revised the swingarm for '25 so it needs less slack (dirt-bike forums, manual quotes via BSE Motor).
- Principle over number: a single defensible enduro manual figure could not be cleanly verified - enduro values tend to sit at the upper end of long-travel off-road models, but here explicitly use your manual, not a rule of thumb.
Always set at the tightest point of the chain's rotation: turn the wheel, find the tightest spot, measure there. The reason is geometry - the chain is tightest when the countershaft (front sprocket), swingarm pivot and rear axle line up, the moment the distance between the sprockets is greatest (BSE Motor; MX forums).
Why slack matters
When the rear compresses and the swingarm points up, the sprocket-to-sprocket distance shortens and the chain gets tighter (BSE Motor). So
- Too tight: at full compression the chain can bind, heavily loads the gearbox output shaft and countershaft bearing, and in the extreme can snap. A too-tight setting also runs the wheel off-centre (TRO; MX forums).
- Too loose: the chain slaps, can jump teeth and in the worst case derail (EngineerFix; 24MX).
Wear and elongation - when to replace
Chains do not really "stretch" - material wears from the pins and bushings, opening up the space between links (GlobalSpec).
Quick check (3 o'clock): pull the chain back off the rear sprocket at axle height. If it lifts far enough to expose about half a tooth, it is worn; a new chain wraps snugly (RevZilla). Rough marker: more than about 1.5 mm of lift means the chain set is due for replacement (ThumperTalk/RK practice).
Measuring: measure a defined number of links under tension and compare to new (manual/maker). Common replace limits: about 2 % elongation for non-sealed chains, 1 % for O-ring chains on road bikes (GlobalSpec); the general industrial limit is around 3 % (RK/ThumperTalk). A chain adjuster already sitting far back is another sign (Carolina Cycle).
Always as a set: replace the chain and both sprockets together. A new chain on worn sprockets wears fast because fresh and worn parts have markedly different dimensions (Pro-X).
Sprockets - reading the teeth
Hooked, shark-finned or asymmetrically worn teeth mean: replace (RevZilla; Pro-X). Worn sprockets chew up any new chain quickly - hence the set replacement above.
Cleaning and lubing
- Road interval: roughly every 500-1000 km or per manual (Haynes; New Motorcycle Riders).
- Off-road/wet: lube after every wet or muddy ride, or after every wash once the chain is dry (New Motorcycle Riders).
- With what: a dedicated chain cleaner and a soft brush; no wire brush, no harsh solvents that attack the seal rings (RevZilla practice; chain-and-sprocket-care). Lube a warm chain on the inner run and let it tack off.
- Many MX bikes run a non-sealed 520; sealed MX chains also exist (Pro-X). On sealed chains protecting the rings matters most.
Chain sizes and ring types
The number encodes the dimensions: the first digit(s) = pitch in eighths of an inch, the last two = roller width in eighths of an inch (Wemoto; Randakk). So
- 520 = 5/8" pitch, 1/4" wide; 525 = 5/8" pitch, 5/16" wide; 530 = 5/8" pitch, 3/8" wide (Wemoto). 428 is a smaller pitch for lighter machines. Always check the pitch before buying sprockets (see gearing-guide).
- O-ring vs X-ring vs Z-ring: per maker testing X-ring chains generate about 10-18 % less friction than O-ring chains of the same size (HZQJ). DID cites roughly double the life for X-ring (about 32,000 vs 16,000 km) (MotoSport/DID). The Z-ring is an evolved X-ring variant (e.g. EK's ZX-ring) that seals better yet still rolls freely (Max Inc). Rule: X/Z-ring chains have less friction and a longer life than O-ring chains.
Alignment
Swingarm marks are a guide, not a guarantee - trusting them blindly has produced off-centre wheels and over-tight chains (TRO). Verify with a string or straightedge across both sprockets and measure on both sides; the difference is the offset (TRO; Cycle World). Misalignment wears chain and sprockets fast.
Maintenance cadence (summary)
- Slack: per manual, at the tightest point; on a new chain re-check after the first ride (it beds in).
- Clean/lube: road every 500-1000 km / per manual; off-road after every wet ride.
- Wear: 3 o'clock test regularly; replace the chain set at ~2 % (non-sealed) / ~1 % (O-ring) elongation or half an exposed tooth.
- Alignment: check every time you adjust tension.
