Sepang International Circuit in Selangor is owned and operated by Sepang International Circuit Sdn Bhd, a government-linked company under the Malaysian Minister of Finance. Wikipedia dates the opening to 7 March 1999 and names the German architect Hermann Tilke as its designer. The full grand prix layout measures 5.543 km with 15 turns; it can also be split into a north circuit of 2.706 km with nine turns and a south circuit of 2.609 km with eight turns. The track is between 16 and 22 metres wide. Its defining feature is the 0.927 km back straight, separated from the pit straight by a single very tight hairpin. The circuit was completely resurfaced in 2016, with corners reprofiled by the Italian planners Dromo and the final corner raised by roughly one metre. Formula One ran the Malaysian Grand Prix here from 1999 to 2017, and MotoGP visited from 1999 to 2019 and again from 2022 onwards. Two long full-throttle sections, wide sweeping corners in between and a generous track width - our own records match that with a fast but still technical character. On the long back straight the bike reaches its top speed and reacts to any unrest in the chassis. If the bars start to weave there, top of our cause list is the balance between front and rear: with the rear sitting too high the front goes light.
