The Circuit de Belmont in the Aveyron is at heart a kart track used for supermoto as well: 1500 metres long, eight metres wide, fully renovated and homologated internationally by the FFSA. It is described as hilly, with climbs, descents, straights and hairpins - one of the larger outdoor facilities of its kind in Europe, and among other things a venue for the French supermoto championship. Elevation on asphalt is a different job from elevation off road. The crest unloads the front wheel exactly when you want to brake, and the descent loads it exactly when you are already turning in. Time is found here in the order of braking and turn-in, not in more throttle down the straight. What catches you in the tight technical sections: the engine dies when the revs drop too far in a hairpin. Top of our cause list is a dragging clutch or a light flywheel - a flywheel weight keeps the bike alive down low instead of leaving you stranded on the exit.
