Four motocross tracks, over 34 miles of marked singletrack and another 20-plus miles of open trail: Battery Park Off-Road in Nesmith is one of the largest off-road areas in South Carolina, spread across around 200 acres. Alongside the main track there is a GP course that runs into the trail network, a supercross layout and a kids-only track. The ground is mostly sandy, with loose sections and little hardpack in between; the main track itself mixes sand, black dirt and clay sections and works with 30 to 50 feet of elevation change - remarkable for coastal plain. Practically: open daily from 10am to 5pm. Gate fee 5 dollars a person plus a 35 dollar ride fee, 15 dollars for children eight and under. Camping is 10 dollars a person, an RV hookup between 35 and 50; there are 35 full sites plus rental campers. Turn up without your own kit and you can hire a bike or a quad with gear. An MX helmet is mandatory, and a parent or legal guardian signs for minors. On this sand you will know the feeling: the rear pogos and swims as soon as it goes deep. Our cause list starts at shock rebound - too fast for sand. Fewer clicks out, and the rear stops building itself up.
