Riding deep sand

Motocross · intermediate · sand

Deep sand is the great energy-sapper, so let the bike do the work and keep your weight back. Sit or stand further back than usual to keep the front light and floating; the moment your weight goes forward, the front digs in. Keep the throttle steady or gently accelerating - the throttle takes the place of your suspension in sand, so a chopped throttle pitches you forward and buries the front. Let the rear spin and snake its own line rather than fighting it. Use a higher gear than feels natural for smoother power, stay loose, look well ahead and, above all, keep your momentum up. Lower tyre pressures and a paddle/soft rear tyre add a lot of drive when it's really deep.

A starting point to verify on the bike - not a safety guarantee. Change one thing at a time and check on track.
