Steel City Raceway sits at 278 Story Road in Delmont, Pennsylvania, roughly 40 miles east of Pittsburgh. The venue made its name as a national circuit: Racer X records the first motocross race on 17 July 1988, won by Rick Johnson, and lists 36 events in total at the site, rounds of the AMA Pro Motocross series and of the women's WMX championship, through to 2012. Because the round often served as the season finale, several titles were settled here, among them 1995 and 2001 in the 125 class, 1996 and 2002 in the 250 class and 2008 in the 450 class. The race archive We Went Fast records that the track closed in 2014, two years after its last national; the source gives no reason. How it rides is therefore mainly a question for the archive. Our records hold a hard, grown-in surface with jumps, fast sections and off-camber corners, a layout that asks for front grip and line discipline. Track length and altitude are not in our records and are not documented in the sources found either. Do not plan a riding trip to this address: since the closure it is no longer a place to ride, and if an event is ever announced at the site, ask the promoter before you travel whether riding actually takes place there.
