After the helmet, boots are the most important protective gear in motocross. They protect the ankle, shin and foot from impact, twisting and exhaust burns.
Look for a **rigid shaft construction** with an inner shin plate and a hinge system that allows forward flex but prevents the ankle from rolling sideways. Quality boots have replaceable buckles and soles - that extends their life considerably.
Fit is decisive: a new MX boot feels stiff at first and needs breaking in. Your toes should lightly touch the end and your heel must not slip. Boots that are too big give no support; too small and they pinch on the instep.
Beginners find solid boots from around 150 euros; race models with elaborate hinge systems cost considerably more. Invest in protection and build quality rather than looks - a good boot lasts several seasons.
