Young riders need gear designed for their body size - buying adult sizes in small simply does not work. Three pieces form the basis.
**Helmet**: choose a youth size with a certified standard (ECE 22.06). An oversized helmet shifts in a crash and fails to protect. Measure the head circumference and pick it snug, but without pressure points.
**Back protector**: kids need an EN 1621-2 certified protector in the right length too - from the tailbone to the neck. Many makers offer youth sizes or height-adjustable models that grow with the child.
**Knee protection**: light knee guards protect against impact and abrasion. For ambitious young riders there are also braces in small sizes.
Important: kids grow fast. Plan to replace gear as soon as it gets too tight or the helmet has taken a crash. Safety beats looks and beats the temptation to let them 'grow into' the gear.
