1100 metres, hard ground, category 3, UISP homologated: Ascoli Satriano in the province of Foggia is a compact provincial track, looked after by ASD Racing Off Road and known locally as San Potito. Rounds of the UISP trophy for Puglia and Basilicata run here regularly - so it is a circuit that sits on a race calendar and is maintained accordingly. Eleven hundred metres is short. That means plenty of laps, little recovery and a surface that changes under you while you ride: what still gripped at ten in the morning is polished by midday. Treat the first half hour deliberately as reconnaissance and rebuild your lines afterwards instead of clinging to the morning feel. On polished hardpack the same thing then shows up reliably: the front feels vague, the grip up front is missing. First entry on our cause list is front tyre pressure - too much air for hard ground; drop it for a bigger contact patch.
